The calculations you actually repeat
Molar mass
Sum atomic masses from the molecular formula. Watch hydrates and parentheses: CuSO₄·5H₂O is not the same as CuSO₄.
Moles ↔ mass
n = m / M. In a synthesis, convert limiting reagent grams to moles before you talk about theoretical yield.
Dilution
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂. Keep units consistent (mL with mL, M with M). This shows up in extraction and workup as often as in general chemistry.
Percent yield
Percent yield = (actual / theoretical) × 100. Theoretical yield requires the limiting reagent, not “the mass of everything you mixed.”
Degree of unsaturation
For CcHhNnOx (halogens count as H, ignore O): DU = (2c + 2 + n − h) / 2. Each ring or π bond costs one degree; a triple bond costs two. Use it before you invent a structure from a formula.
pH
pH = −log[H⁺] for strong acids in the usual student approximation. Organic labs also care about pKa when choosing an extraction base — that is a lookup, not the same button as a pH calculator.
