What to put on the cards

Org chem rewards recognition under time pressure: “is this an alcohol or a phenol?”, “does this secondary halide go SN2 or E2?”, “where does Br add on this alkene?” Those are flashcard jobs. Multi-step syntheses are not — save those for worked problems.

Four decks cover most of a first-semester exam:

• Functional groups — name, structure cue, and a typical reaction.
• Substitution and elimination — SN1, SN2, E1, E2 decision factors. Pair with the mechanism guide.

Step-by-step study loop

1. Do 10–15 cards, not 80. Stop while you still have attention.
2. Say the answer out loud before you flip. Recognition is not recall.
3. Missed card → write one sentence why, then a related homework item.
4. Twice a week, take a short MCQ quiz on reaction naming or product prediction so the cards transfer to exam format.

Useful tips

• Study offline on the train. If the deck requires an AI call, you will skip it.
• Keep reagent cards paired with “what it does,” not isolated names.
• After a scanned homework solve, add one card for the mechanism you just missed.

Common mistakes

• Memorizing arrow-pushing as a cartoon without substrate class.
• Only reviewing cards you already know (the easy-deck trap).
• Never testing product prediction — naming a reaction is easier than drawing the product.
